Vinyl Flooring vs. Laminate: Which is Right for You?

Installing Wood Floor

Why Choose Us

Both vinyl and laminate provide a more affordable alternative to genuine hardwood, but these two materials shouldn’t be confused. Here’s how they differ:

  • Laminate: Made of 99% wood byproducts, laminate is created using multiple layers of high-density fiberboard. It is sometimes called “wood composite.”

  • Vinyl: Not to be confused with sheet vinyl, modern vinyl replicates the appearance of hardwood flooring. It’s made using multiple layers of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

So, that’s how the materials differ, but which one should you choose? Let’s consider appearance, moisture resistance, and comfort.

Appearance

Vinyl flooring used to appear cheap and overly artificial, but the introduction of luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) has seen an end to those days. As with laminate, the photographic layer is good at replicating the appearance of natural materials, and texturing can be provided across the surface for a more authentic feel.

That said, laminate flooring still probably looks a touch more natural. Expect deeper embossing and better imaging.

Moisture Resistance

Laminate flooring is moderately moisture-resistant, which is one reason why people often prefer to use it instead of genuine hardwood. That said, it isn’t recommended for bathrooms or basements since exposure to moisture can still cause damage.

For such rooms, it’s impossible to rival vinyl flooring. It’s impervious to water penetration, so you’ll enjoy superior peace of mind.

Comfort

Comfort is clearly going to be a central concern when you’re picking out flooring. Both vinyl and laminate flooring can be installed over a rubber subfloor to provide a cushioned surface that remains warm to the touch, so expect a strong level of comfort regardless of your choice.

If you really want to make comfort your top priority, laminate flooring just edges ahead. It’s thicker than vinyl, and the incorporation of wood makes it warmer to walk on.
