Common Types of Roof Flashing

Working On roof

You may be looking to replace your roof flashing because there is a leak, you’re replacing or repairing your roof, or you’re just looking to update the appearance of your house. So, how do you decide which type of roof flashing is right for your roof? We’ve got a quick overview of the four most common types of flashing that you may require on your next project.

Continuous Flashing

You’ll most likely need to add continuous flashing if you have a sloped roof. Continuous flashing is made up of one long piece to that will protect the joint between a vertical wall and a sloped roof, and it can be made out of lead, copper, aluminum, and galvanized steel. You’ll want to be careful about how you install this type of flashing because it has a greater chance of leaking if it is installed incorrectly.

Step Flashing

A great alternative to continuous flashing is step flashing, which is also used for sloped roof intersections, around chimneys, and beside dormer walls. It’s typically made out of aluminum or galvanized tin that is 6 or 8 inches wide and a foot long. Each piece is stacked one after the other to form steps up the slope of the roof. The overlap of each piece prevents water from getting under the shingles.

Vent Pipe Flashing

Also known as plumbing vent flashing, this type of flashing is mostly seen around pipes that come out of the roof. They are in the shape of a cone and mostly made out of galvanized tin, and are rimmed with a rubber gasket.

Valley Flashing

Valley flashing can be found where two valleys of a roof plane join. It is usually in the shape of a W and is placed on top of the roofing felt. Valley flashing is made out of galvanized steel or aluminum, and comes in 10-foot lengths that range from 16 to 24 inches wide.
